How can they determine how fast a vehicle was going prior to the accident?

Recently there was an accident here where a full size van hit a bridge support. There was no survivors and no witness. And no skid marks. Yet police said the van was doing over 50 miles an hour. In situations like this, how do they determine how fast the vehicle was going when the accident occurred?
