NEED HELP LOWERING MY VW?

thank you for helping me. I have a 1999 VW JETTA MKIV. I am looking to lower it like slam it to about a 2 1/2 - 3 inches. I am not looking for something expensive. price is an issue. i have saved up for a suspension and rims. coil overs are expensive, i looked on ebay and cant really find anything to drop it 2 1/2 - 3 inches unless of course i cut a coil off. thank you so much for your help. haha and due to how close it will be to the ground do not worry... i am buying a complete steel skid plate to cover the oil pan, trany, and engine so it wont be much of a problem anymore
