Period question - Important?

Hi. I'm worried about my mom. She is 53 and she was told by her doctor that she was finished with menopause. She no longer needed to use protection and her last period was two years ago. Last night she called to tell me that she got her period. She is very freaked out. It's not just light spotting it is a heavy flow. She called her doctor but she has not gotten back to her. I am worried that this is a sign of a more serious medical problem. If she is all of a sudden getting her period she can probably get pregnant too right? If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.
