Chronicle of a death foretold?

just finished this brilliant book today, but i've been intrigued by one aspect which i'm not really sure about. what exactly happened between angela and bayardo wit the letters? did they really fall in love? or was this "love" a delusion? what was the meaning of bayardo not opening the letters? how come angela suddenly became infatuated with bayardo right after she had been disgraced?
